Tesla Wall Connector installation in Ontario

A Tesla Wall Connector is hardwired to a 240-volt circuit, and Tesla's installation manual pairs a 60 A breaker with its full 48 A output. In Ontario the wiring needs an ESA notification of work filed before it starts. We handle both as part of an EV charger installation in Ottawa, from the panel check to ESA's Certificate of Acceptance.

What a Tesla Wall Connector installation involves

Six steps take a Wall Connector from the box to its first charge. Tesla's Gen 3 manual covers the charger itself; ESA and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code cover the wiring that feeds it:

  1. A load calculation on your panel

It shows how many amps your service can spare beside the furnace, dryer, stove and air conditioning, which sets the breaker size. The ways to make room are under will your electrical panel handle a Level 2 charger.

  2. The ESA notification of work

Filed with the Electrical Safety Authority before any wiring starts. It is ESA's electrical permit, separate from a City building permit.

  3. The circuit and the conduit

A dedicated 240-volt circuit from the panel, copper conductors only, in 3/4-inch (21 mm) conduit by default or 1-inch (27 mm) where the run needs it. The wires can enter the wirebox from the top, the bottom or the rear.

  4. Mounting the charger

On any flat, vertical surface that carries its 4.5 kg with the wirebox: a garage wall, an outside wall or a pedestal beside the driveway. The terminal screws are torqued to 5.6 Nm.

  5. Commissioning

The installer joins the charger's own Wi-Fi network from a phone, programs the breaker size and connects it to your home Wi-Fi, which brings over-the-air firmware updates.

  6. ESA's review and the Certificate of Acceptance

When the work passes, ESA issues the certificate. Keep it with the notification: ESA says both matter for home insurance and for resale.

How to choose the breaker for a Tesla Wall Connector

The breaker sets the charging speed. Tesla's manual gives the full output on a standard double-pole 60 A breaker, and five smaller settings for a panel with less to spare. Each breaker, the most the charger then delivers, and the power at 240 volts:

60 A breaker
48 A output, 11.5 kW: full speed, and the manual's choice for maximum power.
50 A breaker
40 A output, 9.6 kW.
40 A breaker
32 A output, 7.6 kW.
30 A breaker
24 A output, 5.7 kW.
20 A breaker
16 A output, 3.8 kW.
15 A breaker
12 A output, 2.8 kW.

The breaker size is programmed into the charger during commissioning, so its output matches the circuit it sits on. The manual also notes that some Tesla cars draw less than the charger's maximum, because the charging rate depends on the car's onboard charger as well.

For full power, the manual asks for at least 6 AWG copper wire rated 90 °C (THWN-2) on a breaker rated 75 °C, or 4 AWG on a breaker rated 60 °C. Below full power, the conductors are sized to the local electrical code, which in Ontario is the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.

Why the ESA notification is filed before the work starts

ESA requires an electrical permit, which it calls a notification of work, for every EV charger installation, filed before work begins. The notification creates a permanent record of the work and starts ESA's review of it.

The person doing the work files it. ESA says anyone you hire for electrical work in an Ontario home must by law be a Licensed Electrical Contractor, and that contractor files the notification for you. A homeowner may do electrical work in their own home by filing it themselves; a friend, relative or neighbour may not.

The charger is checked too. ESA requires an EV charging system to carry a recognized Canadian certification mark, and Tesla's manual lists the Gen 3 Wall Connector's cULus listing, file E351001.

If the load calculation calls for a bigger electrical service, ESA directs you to your local distribution company, since any change to the service runs through it.

Indoor or outdoor: mounting it for an Ottawa winter

Both work. The Gen 3 Wall Connector carries a Type 3R enclosure rating and operates from -30 °C to 50 °C, according to Tesla's manual.

Ottawa rarely reaches the bottom of that range. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Ottawa airport count 0.45 nights a year colder than -30 °C, against 15.6 colder than -20 °C. A charger in an attached garage sits warmer still.

Height is the other winter choice. The manual's limits:

  • Recommended: about 1.15 m, indoors or out.
  • Highest: 1.52 m.
  • Lowest outdoors: 0.6 m, against 0.45 m indoors.

At the recommended height the charger stays well clear of Ottawa's February snow, which averages 30 cm deep at the airport. Outdoors, the feeder wires enter through watertight fittings, and the wirebox's gasketed washers keep its Type 3R rating.

Place it where the 7.3 m cable reaches the charge port without strain and can loop around the unit. Its Wi-Fi runs on 2.4 GHz, and the manual advises keeping concrete, masonry and metal studs from standing between the charger and your router.

How two Teslas share power on one site

Tesla's group power management links up to six Wall Connectors at one site over Wi-Fi. Each sits on its own branch circuit of up to 60 A, and their combined output never exceeds the power allocated to the group. Tesla's manual says the feature reduces the need for an electrical upgrade to charge several cars at once.

One car charging alone still gets the full 48 A. When both plug in, the chargers divide the allocation between them automatically, and the manual's planning table suggests 12 A or more per charger for overnight parking, which fits two cars that sleep at home. Access control can limit a charger to up to 10 Tesla cars, named by VIN.

Charge your Tesla from solar or overnight power

Pair the Wall Connector with solar and daytime charging runs on your own panels: a solar carport puts them over the parking spot, and a home battery stores their output for an evening plug-in.

For charging from the grid, schedule the car for Ontario's ultra-low overnight hours. The overnight prices, and the City of Ottawa loan that covers a Level 2 charger, are in our guide to EV charger rebates in Ontario.

How KAJK installs your Wall Connector

KAJK Constructors, an Ottawa solar installer since 2016, installs EV charging stations at homes and businesses, from a Level 2 charger in a garage to stations in parking garages and lots. We are licensed and file the ESA notification for every installation, and we can tie the charger to solar so your Tesla runs on power from your own panels.

The free assessment looks at your panel, the run from the panel to where you park and the mounting spot, then sets the breaker size for your car. Call (613) 869-8254 or book a free assessment.

Questions we get asked

Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector yourself?

Tesla's manual says the Wall Connector should be installed by people trained and qualified to work on electrical systems. In Ontario, ESA lets a homeowner do electrical work in their own home with a notification of work filed first, but not a friend, relative or neighbour. Anyone you hire must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor, who files the notification for you.

Does a Tesla charger need a 50 or 60 amp breaker?

For the Wall Connector's full 48 A output, Tesla's manual specifies a 60 A breaker, which gives 11.5 kW at 240 volts. A 50 A breaker also works and gives 40 A, or 9.6 kW. The installer programs the breaker size into the charger at commissioning.

Does a Tesla Wall Connector have to be hardwired?

Yes. The Gen 3 manual says to hardwire the branch circuit to the breaker and not to install a cord-and-plug connection, and it allows no extension cords or adapters.

Can you just plug a Tesla into a regular outlet?

Yes, with a cord set on a standard 120-volt outlet, which Hydro Ottawa calls Level 1 charging. It says Level 1 takes up to 50 hours to bring a battery-electric car from empty to 80%, while a Level 2 charger such as the Wall Connector gives a full charge in four to 10 hours.
