Solar installation projects in Ottawa, on video

These are homes we have put solar on around Ottawa, in our own videos: rooftop systems from 7.3 kW to 31.6 kW, some with a lithium battery bank, some with sunlight backup and some tied straight to the grid on net metering. Most run about a minute.

Two longer videos walk through how we build a home system: anchoring, wiring and setting the panels, then the choice between string inverters and microinverters and the safety disconnects each one needs. The whole service is on our residential solar panels page.

Solar homes with lithium battery backup

Each of these systems keeps generating when the grid goes down. The house switches to its sunlight and battery backup, so essential devices stay on through an outage. More on our solar battery storage and home battery backup page.

Solar homes with sunlight backup

Sunlight backup gives a house backup power without a battery bank. When the grid is down, a hybrid inverter or a smart energy manager switches the system over and runs essential loads for as long as the sun shines.

Grid-tied homes on net metering

14 videos

Most homes go grid-tied: the panels power the house first and send the surplus to the grid for credits on the bill. One of these roofs has many peaks and another has interlocking metal shingles, and each system was designed around the roof it sits on. How the credits work: net metering in Ontario.

Questions about our solar projects

What size solar systems does KAJK install on homes?

The homes in these videos run from 7.3 kW on 16 panels to 31.6 kW on 80 panels. We size each system from the roof, your last year of electricity use and what you want the system to do, so the design follows the house. Book a free assessment to get yours sized.

Can solar go on a roof with many peaks or a metal roof?

Yes. Under grid-tied homes above, the Ottawa home with a roof of many peaks carries 25 panels, and the Greely home with an interlocking metal shingle roof carries 28.

Can a solar system keep my power on during an outage?

Yes, when it is built with backup. A lithium battery bank keeps essential devices running through an outage, and sunlight backup runs them while the sun shines, without batteries. Both are on this page, and our solar battery storage page covers the battery side.
